Drive On Kat Scholarship

The Drive On Kat Scholarship honors the legacy of Kathryn “Kat” Cerruto, a fellow Rebelle competitor whose story continues to impact the off-road community. During her prescreening health exam for the 2024 Rebelle Rally, Kat was diagnosed with cancer. She was unable to compete, and she passed away nine months later. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of preventive health care and taking care of ourselves while pursuing the things we love.

This scholarship was created to encourage prescreen health checks, support competitors in reaching the Rebelle start line, and remind us not to postpone the goals and experiences that matter most.

As Team Panamint Rhumb, we are applying because Kat’s story reflects something we deeply connect with—the balance between preparation, health, and fully living the life we are working so hard to build. The Rebelle Rally challenges us to be self-reliant, intentional, and present. This scholarship reflects those same values beyond the course.
Below are our individual video applications for review. Each reflects our personal perspective on why we are competing in the Rebelle Rally and what this opportunity means to us.

Glamis Dunes — Rebelle U Training & Trials

Glamis marked a different kind of training for us.

The Rebelle U 3-Day Navigation Intensive opened the weekend with deep dives into world-navigation concepts, then layered in the practical tools that bring it all to life—maps, compass, plotter, minute ruler, and more. From classroom to field, the focus stayed the same: building a stronger foundation in non-digital navigation and learning how to think, not just follow.

Each day added complexity and confidence. The classroom work translated directly into field challenges, where speed, accuracy, and comfort with the tools started to matter just as much as understanding them.

Then came something new.

This was the first time the Rebelle Rally introduced Rebelle Trials in Glamis—a full-day mock rally stage that put everything into motion.

Teams were given trackers, maps, checkpoint guides, roadbooks, and bulletins, then sent out to “compete” in a single-day Rebelle stage. It was as close to real as it gets without being on the official course—scored, structured, and still supported with coaching along the way.

It wasn’t just practice. It was the moment all the pieces started to connect: navigation, teamwork, decision-making, and pace—all under pressure, all in real terrain.

Glamis gave us more than training. It gave us a glimpse of the rhythm, intensity, and mindset this event demands—and a better understanding of where we’re strong and where we still have work to do.

Ocotillo Training — First Intensive Complete

We spent the first night in the Superstition OHV Area, where we were unexpectedly (and thoroughly) entertained by a practice airshow from the Blue Angels overhead—a surreal start to a desert training weekend.

The next morning we met the group and dove straight into the fundamentals: understanding our vehicles, off-road driving technique, and just how much there is to learn when you start looking at driving through a different lens. It’s amazing how many skills we picked up in just a short time—things we didn’t even know we were missing before the course.

Day 2 took us into the dunes, where we were pushed outside comfort zones, worked through lifelong fears, and found new confidence in what these vehicles can actually do.

Day 3 shifted gears completely. We stayed in camp and focused on navigation—everything from latitude and longitude to using a map and ruler with precision. Simple tools, but a completely different way of thinking about movement and terrain.

This 4-day intensive is designed for beginning to intermediate students, but it’s clear the skills go far beyond training. It’s about building competence, safety, and confidence for any off-road or overland environment—not just for the Rebelle Rally, but for every mile that comes after it.
